Windows Server 2008 VHD weirdness

I was trying to download a VHD for testing out Sharepoint 2010 here when I saw the following written on the page.

So I thought, well since I am running a pretty powerful 64 bit machine, (but running windows 7) I could run a Windows Server 2008 on a VHD and then run Sharepoint 2010 vhd inside it. So I go to the page for downloading Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition (Full Install) vhd and this is what I find.

Humm, so I need to install Windows Server 2008 without Hyper-V probably to evaluate Windows Server 2008 with Hyper-V ? So I look at Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition (Core Install) here. And this is what I find.

So basically, if I am on another operating system (even if it’s a Windows Server, e.g. Windows Server 2003), I have no way to evaluate Windows Server 2003 or anything that goes on top of it without purchasing it first and physically installing it first. Doesn’t that defeat the whole point of evaluation itself ?
Weird !

Edit (Jan, 06, 2012): Well have you ever heard "Too much knowledge, harmful". I think this is the case with this one as well because a couple of months of writing this, I installed a Windows Server 2008 which I had downloaded from MSDN. Installed SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise on it and then went ahead with installing Sharepoint Server 2010 which went just fine. Think I read too much into it !
